How amazing today we have access to the world at the palm of our hands. A mobile or a tablet, can give you access to many apps available to teach, record, and write your own music!
Bellow are a list of apps available for Apple iOS or Android. These apps can work via the microphone of the device you use or you will require a special USB cable that we sell instore at Piano City. This USB cable is a MIDI cable the MIDI cable will work with the various apps that connect directly into your piano. The Cable will also allow the audio from your tablet or phone to utilise the speakers of your Piano so that your piano basically becomes your new music player, your can play anything through the cable once connected, even watch youtube videos.
There are dedicated apps that remote control your piano either for a Yamaha or a Casio piano. Then there also are MIDI apps that give more abilities that your piano can’t do, anything from recording, lessons, music and more.
WHAT IS MIDI?
MIDI has been around for a long time and it is basically the musical term that is used to turn your instrument into computer data. MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. With this interface, it can convert everything you play into actual music notes on a manuscript, a computer can read the exact detail of what you are playing or even send data back for it to play for you. It knows velocity/sensivity, speed/tempo and even the voice/tone you selected to play with. The great thing with this type of data everything is completely editable and much more interactive to work with, especially with creating or learning music.
USB MIDI VS MICROPHONE LEARNING APPS
There are many teaching apps available Midi compatible and non Midi compatible which use the microphone on your smart device to work out if you are playing the right note.
These apps will listen or see the correct note via midi, and will correct/help you to learn how to play, they have exercises or your favourite songs that you can follow.
Using a microphone on your device are ideal if you don’t have a keyboard that is compatible with MIDI, but there are downfalls, for example from customers experience, that have told us that app “Simply Piano” can not recognise when the play the note “G” via the microphone, and this was said by a few customers, so they were looking for a solution either they needed a new piano or they needed the USB MIDI cable.
Why should you purchase the USB MIDI cable over just using your smart devices microphone. There are 3 reasons.
- Usb Midi data is much more accurate than the microphone, it will recognise all your played notes instantly, especially when you play more advance pieces.
- When you practice using the microphone option you can not put on headphones, but with the USB cable you can.
- There are more apps available that require that direct connection to your piano

YAMAHA SMART PIANIST – This app controls Yamaha Pianos, give you the ability to change the voice sound, utilise the piano room and swipe to change your Grand piano, even open and close the lid of the piano. There is also abilities to play along with your Pianos inbuilt songs and see the music on screen as it plays. Record your music then see your music staff applied to the manuscript.

These apps will work with any music keyboard or digital piano that is Midi compatible with USB connectivity. If your keyboard has a 5-pin connect there are devices to convert it to USB. All apps are Free but some will have a subscription plan to get more features.

CHORDANA PLAY – this app is not just for Casio, it will work on any piano with MIDI connectivity including Yamaha. Chordana play is a fully FREE app, with 50 songs to start learning from. It will connect with USB cable to your smart device, and you can follow the screen like guitar hero to start learning the songs. Lots of fun and gets you motivated to learn.

FLOWKEY – this is a great teaching app, that has lots of videos and lessons to get your started. You can follow how to play music with seeing someone else play right in front of you note by note, you can even see which fingers you should use to press the notes. The app is FREE but requires a subscription for all the features, you can join with a free account to this app that will give you some basic features lessons. They also offer a 7 day free trial which will unlock 1000s of music available to start playing. If you had purchased a Yamaha digital piano or keyboard, you can get a 3-month subscription free with the piano purchase.
